The Fourth European Pragmatism Conference will take place at University College London. It will be hosted by the Department of Science and Technology Studies. The conference is organised in collaboration with the Nordic Pragmatist Network, Associazione Pragma (Italy), Pragmata (France), The Central European Pragmatist Forum, the German Pragmatism Network (Germany), the Dewey-Center Switzerland, and the European Pragmatism Association.
We are grateful to the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy for its ongoing support to the conference.

The Women in Pragmatism Workshop will take place at UCL on 2 August 2022. It will consist of two interactive sessions (scholars circle; three minute presentations), where all attendees will be able to share work-in-progress, and an interactive mentoring session. The day will conclude with a roundtable presentation and the launch of the book Women in Pragmatism: Past, Present and Future, edited by Michela Bella and Núria Sara Miras Boronat.

Am 29. April findet von 14 bis 18 Uhr in Kooperation der FEST Heidelberg und des Heidelberg Center for American Studies ein Workshop zur pragmatistischen Religionsphilosophie statt.
Prof. Dr. Sami Pihlström (Universität Helsinki) wird einen Vortrag unter dem Titel „Losing (one’s) Religion. Pragmatist Considerations“ halten. Nach der Diskussion stellt Prof. Dr. Matthias Jung (Universität Koblenz) seine Neuübersetzung und -kommentierung von William James‘ „The Will to Believe“ in der Reclam Universalbibliothek vor, die im März diesen Jahres erschienen ist.

Tomasello and Religion
Exploring the Philosophical and Theological Relevance of Evolutionary Anthropology

Since many years, Michael Tomasello has been one of the most influential voices in anthropology. On the basis of ontogenetic research with great apes and infants, he tells a fascinating ‘natural history’ of of core human abilities. A better understanding of the genealogy of these abilities may help to deepen our understanding of these abilities and to further model their anthropological relevance. Tomasello’s research may thus be regarded as an important bridge between empirical and theological/ philosophical anthropology. However, this bridge has not been crossed by many scholars yet: An in-depth reception as well as a critical reception of Tomasello’s insights is yet to be achieved both in philosophical as well as theological anthropology.
The conference aims at bridging this gap by evaluating the prospects and boundaries of evolutionary anthropology. Its central focus is twofold: On the one hand, it attempts to analyse the philosophical foundations of evolutionary anthropology. On the other hand, it asks for the specific role of religion in the evolutionary process. Tomasello himself has not been very outspoken about the human capability of transcendence, so that the conference offers the thrilling opportunity to debate this issue with Tomasello himself for the first time.

„Living Democracy“: Erste Tagung des German Pragmatism Network (GerPragNet)
Dass Demokratie mehr als eine politische Herrschaftsform, nämlich vielmehr eine Lebensform ist, gehört zu den Grundeinsichten des Pragmatismus.
Zugleich ist damit ihr prekärer Charakter bezeichnet, der sich gerade in Zeiten der Krise offenbart. Die Reflexion auf die Gelingensbedingungen der demokratischen Lebensform sowie auf die Selbst- und Weltverhältnisse, die sie ermöglichen und fördern, wird damit zu einer drängendengesellschaftlichen und philosophischen Aufgabe. Wovon lebt ein demokratisches Gemeinwesen? Wie kann Demokratie gelebt werden?
Unter dem Titel „Living Democracy? Die Zukunft der Demokratie“ wird im Mai 2021 die erste Jahrestagung des Netzwerks via Zoom stattfinden.

Three Zoom-Workshops with John Kaag on topics from his new book Sick Souls, Healthy Minds
Professor John Kaag is the ninth annual William-James-Scholar-in-Residence at the William James Center of University of Potsdam, Germany. However, this year the Scholar-in-residence with not be “in-Residence”. There will be three Zoom-Workshops, taking place on three consecutive Mondays, 8pm-10pm (Central European Time). Each session will start with a presentation by Kaag. After the presentation, there will be free discussion.
The participants in the workshops are expected to have read John Kaag’s book Sick Souls, Healthy Minds: How William James Can Save Your Life.
