Exploring the Philosophical and Theological Relevance of Evolutionary Anthropology

Since many years, Michael Tomasello has been one of the most influential voices in anthropology. On the basis of ontogenetic research with great apes and infants, he tells a fascinating ‘natural history’ of of core human abilities. A better understanding of the genealogy of these abilities may help to deepen our understanding of these abilities and to further model their anthropological relevance. Tomasello’s research may thus be regarded as an important bridge between empirical and theological/ philosophical anthropology. However, this bridge has not been crossed by many scholars yet: An in-depth reception as well as a critical reception of Tomasello’s insights is yet to be achieved both in philosophical as well as theological anthropology.
The conference aims at bridging this gap by evaluating the prospects and boundaries of evolutionary anthropology. Its central focus is twofold: On the one hand, it attempts to analyse the philosophical foundations of evolutionary anthropology. On the other hand, it asks for the specific role of religion in the evolutionary process. Tomasello himself has not been very outspoken about the human capability of transcendence, so that the conference offers the thrilling opportunity to debate this issue with Tomasello himself for the first time.

Dass Demokratie mehr als eine politische Herrschaftsform, nämlich vielmehr eine Lebensform ist, gehört zu den Grundeinsichten des Pragmatismus.
Zugleich ist damit ihr prekärer Charakter bezeichnet, der sich gerade in Zeiten der Krise offenbart. Die Reflexion auf die Gelingensbedingungen der demokratischen Lebensform sowie auf die Selbst- und Weltverhältnisse, die sie ermöglichen und fördern, wird damit zu einer drängendengesellschaftlichen und philosophischen Aufgabe. Wovon lebt ein demokratisches Gemeinwesen? Wie kann Demokratie gelebt werden?

Unter dem Titel „Living Democracy? Die Zukunft der Demokratie“ wird im Mai 2021 die erste Jahrestagung des Netzwerks via Zoom stattfinden.

Die Veranstaltung will darüber hinaus eine Vernetzung derer, die ein Forschungsinteresse am Pragmatismus haben, vorantreiben. Angesprochen sind, über die Philosophie hinaus, Disziplinen wie Politikwissenschaft, Amerikanistik, Soziologie und Theologie, in denen wesentliche pragmatistische Konzepte und Methoden aufgenommen wurden

Professor John Kaag is the ninth annual William-James-Scholar-in-Residence at the William James Center of University of Potsdam, Germany. However, this year the Scholar-in-residence with not be “in-Residence”. There will be three Zoom-Workshops, taking place on three consecutive Mondays, 8pm-10pm (Central European Time). Each session will start with a presentation by Kaag. After the presentation, there will be free discussion.
The participants in the workshops are expected to have read John Kaag’s book Sick Souls, Healthy Minds: How William James Can Save Your Life.

Tagung der Universität Potsdam in Kooperation mit der Sartre-Gesellschaft.

Pragmatismus und Existentialismus stellen zwei der bedeutendsten philosophischen Richtungen des 20. Jahrhunderts außerhalb der heute herrschenden analytischen Philosophie dar. Das Verhältnis dieser beiden Strömungen hat in der bisherigen philosophischen Forschung jedoch noch kaum die angemessene Aufmerksamkeit gefunden, obwohl es zahlreiche Parallelen zwischen ihnen gibt (z.B. Vorbehalte gegenüber einem Primat des theoretischen Weltverhältnisses oder die Frage nach einem konkreten Denken und einer authentischen menschlichen Lebensführung). Nicht nur bei den Existentialisten, sondern auch im Pragmatismus hat Kierkegaard Spuren hinterlassen. Jean-Paul Sartres Denken wurde an der ENS lange vor Husserl, Heidegger und Hegel durch Henri Delacroix und Georges Dumas geprägt, die ihrerseits wesentlich von William James beeinflusst waren. Was James, Henri Bergson, Wilhelm Dilthey, die Gestaltpsychologie und Edmund Husserl – alle von wichtigem Einfluss auf Sartre – teilten, war die Kritik an der herrschenden Assoziationspsychologie, die auch einen wichtigen Punkt in Sartres Werken der 1930 Jahre darstellt. Pragmatismus und Existentialismus teilen die Nähe der Philosophie zur Psychologie. James und John Dewey waren wie Sartre vielgereiste Philosophen, deren Werke eine breite Verbreitung auch über die universitäre Philosophie hinaus genossen. Dewey und Sartre verbindet auch ein ausgeprägtes politisches Engagement.

Women have been and continue to be underrepresented in the history of philosophy. Unfortunately, pragmatism is not an exception to this current trend. The genealogy of pragmatism pays less attention to the works of those women who contributed to the movement. Jane Addams, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Alice Hamilton, Mary Parker Follett, Anna Julia Cooper, Ella Flagg Young, Lucy Sprague Mitchell, Christine Ladd-Franklin, Mary White Calkins, Florence Kelley, Victoria Welby and many others are only just resurfacing in the literature, after having been cast into oblivion for decades. For those women, to pursue an academic career or to live as public intellectuals was at best a challenge, if not an impossibility.

One century later, the situation is only slowly changing. Women represent almost half of the community of professional philosophers. However, women keep being less quoted, less considered and held less creditable as subjects or objects of knowledge as their male peers. The aim of this conference is thus to celebrate the past and current work of women researching and advancing  philosophy in a pragmatist tradition and highlight their ongoing contributions to specialist academic research as well as public discourse.

The conference will also promote mentoring, networking, and sharing good practice between women working on any aspect of the pragmatist tradition, broadly construed. As an output and lasting legacy of the meeting, we plan to create a virtual archive of women currently engaged in research on pragmatism, which will strengthen cooperation and facilitate communication between scholars. Lastly, the reunion of women pragmatists should lead to the adoption of some resolutions to correct gender bias in research, teaching and cooperation analogous to other associations of women philosophers.

Persons who self-identify as women and gender non-conform persons are encouraged to send a 300-word abstract prepared for blind-peer review to nsmiras@ub.edu before the 30th of September within one of the following research areas (please give the number of the area in which you wish to be considered):
